If a married person enters a nursing home, his spouse at home is entitled to keep quite a few assets. For example, if the spouse at home has a low level of income, she can have some of the income that would go to the nursing home resident. In addition, that spouse at home can keep the house, all of the household goods and furnishings in it, and the nicest car. Furthermore, the spouse at home is allowed to have prepaid funerals, durable medical equipment, and term life insurance. So the spouse at home is allowed to keep many more assets than the person in the nursing home.
