Our city, while maybe not visited as often as Ohio’s “Three C’s” (Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati), is famous in its own right: Dayton is the birthplace of aviation, where the Wright brothers (who would later perform the famous flight at Kitty Hawk) were born.
Dayton is full of exciting aviation-related activities. The Dayton/Montgomery County Convention & Visitors Bureau offers a helpful list of the aviation sites in the Dayton area. These include the following:
Aviation Trail & Parachute Museum: This fun, educational driving tour takes you through the Parachute Museum, among the other six stops. At the Parachute Museum, you can learn about the origins of the parachute, which was invented in our very city.
Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historic Park: This park honors the nation’s leaders in flight, including Wilbur Wright, Orville Wright, and Paul Laurence Dunbar. At this park, you can explore the bicycle shop where the Wright brothers embarked on their quest to fly and see artifacts belonging to Dunbar.
National Aviation Hall of Fame: This hall of fame presents more than a century of flight history, making it a wonderful learning opportunity for all ages. The National Aviation Hall of Fame is attached to the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force.
Dayton Wright Brothers Airport: The Wright B Flyer at the Dayton Wright Brothers Airport gives you the once-in-a-lifetime chance to ride a reproduction of the Wright Brother’s 1911 aircraft. For those who prefer to stay on the ground, you can also experience the hangar-museum’s flight simulator.
